FBI COLLUSION [J. EDGAR HOOVER, CARTHA DELOACH ET AL.] WITH A HARD-LINE DEEP SOUTH SEGREGATIONIST CONGRESSMAN -- AGAINST HUNTER GRAY [JRS, Jr.]

My FBI file, secured via FOIA/PA,  is huge --   3,000 or so documents extending from the '50s to 1979  -- and this does not count several hundred other documents that the FBI will not release to me on grounds of "national security," etc.  The voluminous pile that I do have contains all sorts of interesting things.  Here is a letter from hard-line segregationist Congressman L.H. Fountain of Eastern North Carolina to the notoriously anti-civil rights FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover -- attaching stuff regarding me which he [Fountain] had gotten from the House Un-American Activities Committee -- and asking Hoover for "all the information" on me that FBI can provide.

The immediate reason for Congressman Fountain's   great concern was that, at this point --  early in 1964 -- I was deeply into the developing stages of the organization of our massive, multi-county SCEF civil rights project in the isolated, poverty-stricken, rigidly segregated, hate-filled and Klan-infested Northeastern North Carolina Black-Belt.  This was a major piece of Congressman Fountain's  Congressional District -- and a region where, via literacy tests and related devices and economic reprisals and open terror, relatively few Blacks and Indians had ever been able to register and vote.

J. Edgar Hoover and his top aides were very receptive to Congressman Fountain's request.  But they didn't want to give him information on me "in writing."  Cunningly, they decided to give him all key, basic data -- all very hostile to me -- over the phone.  And this was done -- as indicated by the second document [the last page in a compendium regarding me]  -- by Hoover's top aide, Cartha "Deke" DeLoach.   [DeLoach, I should add, had, in 1962 and 1963, worked with Mayor Allen C. Thompson of Jackson, Mississippi  -- and other Mississippi segs -- against me and my quite successful  Jackson Movement organizing.]

None of this machiavellianism and its poisonous fruits -- by Fountain,  by HUAC,  by the FBI or by any of the other racist forces  -- stopped our organizing  momentum "by even one part of one little inch!"  Our very hard-fought extensive Northeastern North Carolina Black-Belt Project was -- as immediately subsequent pages in this Website indicate -- extremely successful on all fronts.
