Jim Dombrowski, Executive Director of the Southern Conference Educational Fund, was a very good friend of mine until his death in 1983. He was an early supporter of our Jackson Movement, hired me as SCEF Field Organizer at the end of the summer of 1963, backed me to the hilt in all of my endeavors. He was the essence of vision, courage, graciousness, and optimism. Jim retired from SCEF in late 1965 and remained very active in labor union and human rights activities. We kept in contact all the way through. His long obit in the New York Times was entitled, "James A. Dombrowski, Activist."
